History: Judgement Ring wiki link

Personality:
The game introduces Alice as a passive damsel in distress, accompanying the Japanese army to Fengtian for a handoff to who-knows-where in Japan. She hangs back as the main antagonist tears through the traincars, killing everyone in his path. She is also is promptly put to sleep and therefore out of commission as the game's protagonist, Yuri, takes the man on for the first time. At this point in the game, she is still reeling from her father's violent death and the unknown future ahead of her, and it shows in how she handles early-game conflict and events. She's easily spooked, hesitant, and prone to simply sleeping like the dead rather than dealing with things. Her incredibly low Sanity Points at the beginning of the game also suggest that she's easily overwhelmed by the events taking place around her.

Over the course of the game, however, she grows to have a great deal of resiliancy and resolve. Reminders of her father still bring her a great deal of sadness as she comes across them throughout the game, but she's able to use that sadness to push forward rather than wallow. When Yuri disappears halfway through the game, she goes to Europe and bides her time working as an exorcist as the party looks for him instead of resorting to pining or simply following along someone else's orders like she had done after the death of her father. Her introduction in the Europe portion of the game even shows her laughing with another party member over the case they've just completed, demonstrating an ability to compartmentalize and keep going even in the face of great worry and sorrow.

Of course, this resolve comes at the price of a disregard for herself and her safety to see things through. At one point in the game, she goes off to Rouen, France on her own (prompting Yuri to comment that she's stubborn and wouldn't be disuaded) despite the multitude of dangers in doing so. And, more detrimentally for her, she faces down Yuri's demons and offers her life in exchange for his soul without a second thought, even after being warned of the consequences. Basically, she goes from getting into trouble because of her own passivity to getting into trouble because of a tendency to get in over her own head.

It would be remiss not to mention Yuri's role in Alice's development in this regard. While their first meeting was quite rough, they grow to care deeply for each other and bring out the other's best. He gives her confidence and the strength to push forward, and she gets him to be a better person. Her exchange for his soul can seem foolhardy given that it results in her death in the bad ending of the game, but it's illustrative of the depths to which she cares for him and how much that love motivates her.

Independently of her feelings for Yuri, Alice is kind-hearted and often associated with purity throughout the game. She never hesitates to help someone in need (although she's also not above receiving payment for those services), and gives adversaries the benefit of the doubt if they are truly repentant. She serves as a source of warmth and nurturing in the party, for example staying by Yuri's side as he is horribly sea-sick. Kind as she is, however, she is also good-humored and not above kidding and teasing when the opportunity is presented and warranted.

And, finally, Alice is a woman of faith. Her father is a Catholic* priest, and before the events of the game she traveled with him during his mission from the Vatican. Her weapons in the games are holy books and bibles, and she is known to pray at critical junctures. That said, she falls short of zealotry--she is very open to the religious and occult customs she encounters in China and at one point outright denounces the Inquisition as an abuse of authority.

* It should be noted that in Shadow Hearts, Catholicism includes elder gods and aliens. Because why not.

Abilities & Skills:
"Demon Eyes," which is the ability to sense evil and emotional states that go unnoticed by normal people

White/Light Magic (the game uses these terms more or less interchangeably):
- Cure: single-target healing ability
- Holy Edge: add Light element to ally's physical attacks
- Blessed Light: single-target magic attack
- Wish: status ailment cure
- Gospel: physical and special defense buff
- Arc: whole-party healing ability
- Resurrection: revive KO'd party member
- Advent: large multi-target magic attack

Enough nerve to smack a monster or demon with a book if given no other options. Seriously.

Inventory/Companions:
Bible
Another, grosser bible
Cross Pendant on a chain

Choice: Witch
Reason: In canon, Alice is a mage (although she's never referred to as such) specializing in light-aspected magic and healing. She also helps Yuri humanize himself and take control over his Harmonixer powers over the course of the game. On the flip side, her powers also have the capability of being used as a devastating weapon, as demonstrated by the whole first-half conflict with Dehuai. There are interesting parallels in those aspects that can be found in bonding, both as a soothe to monsters' feral tendencies and as a means to prevent her own powers from wreaking havoc. I think she'd be more than happy to step up to the role.
